The binding constraint on deuterium-tritium fusion isn't the plasma. It's an isotope the West abandoned sixty years ago.

  • Every D-T plant breeds its own tritium in a lithium blanket enriched to ~30–90% ⁶Li — not the 7.6% found in nature. A single gigawatt-scale plant needs on the order of 50–100 tonnes.
  • The only legacy route, COLEX, runs on tonnes of liquid mercury and is effectively barred under the Minamata Convention. The United States shut its Y-12 enrichment line decades ago.
  • Today only Russia and China enrich ⁶Li at any scale, selling small quantities near $50,000/kg. Western operational capacity is, for practical purposes, zero.

The race

The winning metric is separative capacity, not tonnes of ore

A cluster of 2025–26 ventures is racing to reopen a capability the West mothballed — and the schedule of the first D-T plants is now their schedule.

  • New entrants are pursuing mercury-free enrichment (laser and electrochemical routes) to sidestep the Minamata problem that killed COLEX.
  • The bottleneck is separative work capacity, not raw lithium — the same distinction that governs uranium enrichment. Ore is abundant; the machines that concentrate the isotope are not.
  • For investors, the exposure is less the fusion developers than the fuel-cycle midstream: whoever can certify enriched ⁶Li at scale prices the whole D-T timeline.
